Thank you for joining MYK’s healing come-unity, where we create community by showing up. Woody Allen said, “90% of success in life is just showing up”. I am grateful you showed up.

WE ARE CELEBRATING OUR 1 YEAR IN BUSINESS ON MAUI. Yes, it was one year ago we came to Maui and decided to open this center, to create a sanctuary for the soul where everyday people can get into the best shape of their life. Now is the time to become the change you wish to see.

One year anniversary customer appreciation offer.

To you, the old & the new students of MYK, we are offering special discounts on memberships, lock them in at an amazing rate, and see the benefits in your mind, as well as your body.

These special rates are only until July 31, 2010

One Month- reg $125, now $100 Three Months-reg $325, now $280 Ten class pass- reg $150, now $120 One year special- reg $1200, NOW ONLY $850!!!!!

Of course, these are special rates. Please, do not use a credit card. If you do, we will need to add those fees to you, as these are really really special rates.

Remember, these rates do expire July 31, 2010, and may be added on to an existing membership to build into your new program.

Here are some words of wisdom from Swami Rama.

When growth & evolution stop, anxiety builds up. In these cases it may help to push one toward taking a fresh look at himself. Just as physical pain becomes a signal that something needs to be done, so anxiety can serve as a motivation to go on with the steps involved in change and development. But there may be a number of other factors which operate in opposition to this need to move forward. Change can seem to be a frightening thing, and the fear of giving up a position of relative security may lead one to tolerate the anxiety or cover it up in one of a number of ways. Alcohol, tranquilizers, and acting out are several of the techniques used to cover up or to temporarily release tension and anxiety. The ego always acts defensively. Any change tends to be seen as a loss of what has been attained up until this time. The nature of the ego’s “i” ness is to defend itself and to maintain stability. To loosen these attachments seems like you are losing your own self…it seems to feel like reality is losing its grip….

and Mary Grace adds in…

This is where yoga can come in. To assist one in dealing with their emotions in a safe environment. Yoga can help detoxify the old emotions, and the toxins in the body that came into the body due to these emotions. Yoga can help the body flush out the old, to make room for the new. Hot yoga allows the ego to drop, and help one create a true self of “I”ness, Yoga helps one truly gain real self esteem, below and above all of the egos tricks in remaining the “same”.

We are never the same, always changing, always evolving, and Yoga helps one get a better boat on the seas of change. So make the change, become your highest self, and create your greatest health. Right now.

To assist this change, I recommend taking the 30 day challenge. Do 30 classes in 30 days and your next membership is 50% off. Pre-reg is required, and daily practice is necessary. That’s a half price membership for giving yourself this amazing challenge. You will be glad you did it. Its time to get that Maui Beach Body, time to lose that Baby fat and be the BEST YOU CAN BE!

Thank you for joining MYK’s community. Through these emails we will keep you updated of our upcoming events, workshops and schedule changes. We are open to your suggestions, so feel free to share with us how we could serve you better. Please share this newsletter with anyone you think would be interested. We are here to assist you on your healing journey.

MYK is offering some new classes

Sunday at 11 am Tess Yong will guide you trough an Estatic Dance

This dance is an inner/outer journey of moving meditation. It is a letting go of self-imposed ideas that restrict movement and is an opening to new ways of expression with the body through motion. It develops a direct body-spirit connection in dance. Let your body and inner guide be your teachers. This is about being present with your own energy and discovering your own dance within. Use this movement and energetic experience to release stuck patterns in body, emotions, mind and spirit. No dance experience or partner necessary. Perfect for those who think they “can’t dance” and for experienced dancers alike. This is free-form, not a structured dance. This is also not a social dance. It is an environment without observers or conversation, where dancers can feel safe to try new things and really push the envelope. It is lightly fascilitated with an invitation to apply patterns of movement to selected areas of life. Much of the time it is open dance floor for you to explore different rhythms, patterns of movement and inner journey.

Donations of $10 are suggested for class, and donations will go to local charities, like the Maui Food Bank.

Thai Yoga Therapy workshop Sunday March 14, 2010 from 7-9 pm $20

Learn the basic stretching movements that have been utilized for over a thousand years in Thailand.

James & Mary studied in Thailand at Wat Po, the worlds oldest Thai Massage school. Both did the week long certification and have studied the Chaing Mai style for several years with Dr Ken Rosen who is a Chinese Medical Doctor working and living in Thailand. They share what they have learned with you.

DONT FORGET, KIDS LOVE TO WORKOUT TOO! Kids fitness programs are now forming at MYK on Wednesdays at 3pm. Kids learn how to do calistenics, basic kickboxing & get to enjoy real yoga. Kids want to learn about their bodies and learn to love their bodies!

Hatha yoga, pronounced, also known as Hatha vidya, is a particular system of Yoga introduced by Yogi Swatmarama, a sage of 15th century India, and compiler of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. In this treatise Swatmarama introduces Hatha Yoga as ‘a stairway to the heights of Raja Yoga’, hence a preparatory stage of physical purification that renders the body fit for the practise of higher meditation. This practise is called shatkarma. The word Hatha is a compound of the words Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon and refers to the principle nadis (energy channels) of the subtle body that must be fully operational to attain a state of dhyana or samadhi. In other respects Hatha yoga follows the same principles as the Raja Yoga of Patanjali including moral restraint yama and spiritual observances niyama. Hatha Yoga is what most people in the West associate with the word “Yoga” and is practiced for mental and physical health throughout the West. Traditional Hatha Yoga is a holistic yogic path, including moral disciplines, physical exercises (e.g., asanas (postures) and Pranayama (breath control), and meditation. The Hatha yoga predominantly practiced in the West consists of mostly asanas (postures) and exercise. Hatha Yoga is one of the two branches of Yoga that focus on the physical culture, the other one being Raja Yoga. Both of these are commonly referred to as Ashtanga Yoga, i.e., Yoga of eight parts (‘ashta’ meaning eight and ‘anga’ meaning limbs). The eight limbs are described below in detail. The main difference is that Raja Yoga uses asanas to mainly get the body ready for prolonged meditation, and hence focuses more on the meditative asana poses: Lotus Pose (Padmasana), Accomplished Pose (Siddhasana), Easy Pose (Sahajasana) and Pelvic Pose (Vajrasana); Hatha Yoga utilizes most of the asana poses. Similarly, Raja Yoga’s use of Pranayama is also devoid of extensive locks (Bandha). Hatha represents opposing energies: hot and cold (fire and water, following the same concept as the yin-yang), male and female, positive and negative, similar but not completely analogous to yin and yang. Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical exercises, or “asanas”, controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance & strength and are practiced to improve the body’s physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment. The Yoga of Patanjali is Ashtanga or comprised of 8 limbs, Yama and Niyama, which are ethical obligations, Asana, Pranayama, which is breath control, Pratyahara, which is sense withdrawal, Dharana, which is concentration, Dhyana, which is meditation, and Samadhi, which is the experience of unity with God. The eight limbs are more precisely viewed as eight levels of progress, each level providing benefits in and of itself and also laying the foundation for the higher levels. In some schools of thought, only Raja Yoga is considered to be Ashtanga Yoga, and Hatha Yoga is thought to consist of six limbs focused on attaining Kundalini. In this scheme, the six limbs of Hatha Yoga are defined as Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Mudra (specific postures to help lock in the breath), Nadanusandhana (hearing of the eternal sound within the body), the whole process cultiminating in the attainment of Kundalini. Due to this, this version of Hatha yoga is also sometimes referred to as Kundalini Yoga. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the style of yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India, and originally established by Sri Krishnamacharya at the Mysore Palace. The asana sequences in Ashtanga Yoga’ are largely based on Krishnamacharya’s book Yoga Makaranda. It is an energetic, aerobic style and was originally intended for teenage boys, but is now practiced by students of all ages. The term ashtanga, meaning eight limbs, refers to the eight limbs of yoga. In Raja Yoga, a classical Indian system of Hindu philosophy, these were expounded by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. Ashtanga seeks to embody the traditional eight limbs of yoga (referred to as ashtanga or Raja Yoga) as expounded by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras. Ashtanga Yoga is said to have its origin in the ancient text Yoga Korunta by Vamana Rishi, which Krishnamacharya received from his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari at Mount Kailash, and later passed on to Pattabhi Jois. Having taught many of the major yoga teachers of the 20th century, such as B.K.S. Iyengar and Indra Devi, Krishnamacharya has a huge influence on many of the modern forms of yoga taught today and played a crucial part in their development. Today, Ashtanga remains the most faithful to his original teachings [citation needed] to teenage boys. Krishnamacharya was well-known for tailoring his teachings to address specific concerns of the person or group he was teaching, and Ashtanga Vinyasa is a result of this. When working under the convalescing Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnamacharya set up a shala, or yoga school, in the palace grounds and adapted Ashtanga practice for the young boys of about twelve years of age who lived there. Ashtanga, therefore, is a very physically demanding practice targeted at focusing the mind and body.
